HEY ALL this is just gonna be a short quick post in which I finally do something that I've wanted to do for a long time. That is, I'M GONNA ASK YOU FOR BOOK RECS!
And not like, book recs in terms of WHAT I WANT TO READ. No, this time I want you to recommend me your FAVORITE, BELOVED, ETERNALLY APPRECIATED, MAKE-YOU-DIE-FROM-THEIR-AWESOMENESS BOOKS. I want to read your favorites, that's what I'm saying.
Depending on how many comments I get I may not be able to take all the recommendations. I will try to take one recommendation per person, but like I said I WILL TRY. Can't guarantee I can. And from your list of recs, I will PICK THE ONE THAT INTEREST ME MOST.
Here's a bit about what I REALLY like in books in case you want to take my tastes into picture.
// the mystery element
// ACTION
// diverse + tangible + well fleshed out setting
// hate-to-love trope
// strong silent serious character type
// characters who are or learn to be SELFLESS
// colorful characters
// humor!!
// deep resonating themes
// SYMBOLISM
// close knit friends (and fam)
// roller coaster, GRIPPING PLOT
// realistic and engaging sort of conflict
// standalones, generally
// awkward romance
If you wish to double check if I've read anything before recommending please see my Goodreads account here: GR LINK.
If your book is more obscure (aka not everyday vocabulary for the bookbloggers), please let me know what genre it is and who is the author. ALSO!! While I don't require the recs to be 100% clean, I would really appreciate a content guide if it does have some questionable stuff in it. THNX a million ;DD
// disclaimer: I reserve the right to not read/dnf whatever book on grounds of content or sheer disinterest on my part.
so now friends, go forth, and dig through your GR shelves, and drop all your recommendations below!!
xx lisa
ps. at some point I'll do a post in which I mini-review all the books I read based on your recommendations.
OH GRACIOUS - I HAVE SO MANY RECS!! I would recommend The Raven Cycle by Stiefvater, except for the fact that ... yeah, that one's really not clean xD. So I shall recommend Sky in the Deep instead because IT IS EPIC AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH, AAHHH. Or Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi - also beyond amazing. OR Porch Swing Girl (Taylor Bennett) or Wonder (R.J Palacio) if you want more of a contemporary.
ReplyDeleteOOOHHH THANKS SAV!! as a matter of fact I've read The Raven Cycle, Sky in the Deep, and Porch Swing Girl already so!! I think from you I'll take Children of Blood and Bone! (I will look up Wonder too though I don't believe I've heard of it before). AAAAHHHH YOU RECOMMEND SUCH GOOD BOOKS THOUGH - I like 100% trust your tastes XDD
DeleteKEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES BY SHANNON MESSENGER!!! *fangirls*
ReplyDeleteIf that’s not really your thing, I would recommend the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini, or Heartless by Marissa Meyer!
I have some good frens who love Keeper of the Lost Cities so I guess that's it!! HEARTLESS REALLY IS AWESOME RIGHT and I should really read Paolini's books but man are they big! :DD
DeleteOOH YAY MY FAVORITE THING. *scrolls happily through Goodreads* I hope you find some awesome books to read this year!
ReplyDeleteMy recommendations:
Any book by Kate DiCamillo - her books are really short reads but they're SO sweet and the characters/writing style are breathtaking. My favorites are Raymie Nightingale, Louisiana's Way Home, and Because of Winn-Dixie. :)
The Wednesday Wars + Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt - two of my new favorites and Okay For Now has almost everything you listed when it comes to your book tastes. XD
The Graveyard Book + Coraline by Neil Gaiman - both very dark books but SO GOOD.
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead - funny with brilliant plot twists.
The Fiddler's Gun + Fiddler's Green by A.S. Peterson - Two very underrated books that I LOVE. There is some language and some pretty violent scenes (it's about pirates during the Revolutionary War).
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys - I'm sure you already know about this one, it's a WWII survival story so it's very dark, but one of the best books I've ever read.
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman - this book is incredible, as is everything by Neal Shusterman.
The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau - I would recommend stopping after this book, as the sequels are nothing special. But this one is fantastic!
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson: Historical fiction about a 16-year old girl trying to run a homestead on her own. Funny and super well done. :)
Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool - Another historical fiction that tells a really neat mystery story with multiple plots that sort of merge together in the end.
Boy + Going Solo by Roald Dahl - Short, incredible autobiographies about Roald Dahl's life!
I think that's enough for now. ;) Hopefully those didn't overlap with anything you've already read!
-Clara <3

ReplyDeleteThe Gaint Killer by ALOE this one is an allegory about fighting the invisible giants and about children who take up the fight. I'm doing a review on my blog soon if you want to check it out.
If you like fast pace stories the Code of Silence series is awesome!
Blank Mastermind is a funny action filled story and it is self published. I also have that one on my blog if you want to learn more.

Deletethanks for the recs I will TOTALLY CHECK THE OTHER TITLES OUT TOO and add them to my enormous and about-to-kill-me tbr ;D
Hahahaha this is your idea not mine and I like it!
ReplyDeleteThe Blades of Acktar, by Tricia Mingerink (forever a favorite, maybe a bit of blood/gore/torture)
The Wilderking Trilogy, by Jonathan Rogers (quirky characters, humor, super fun)
The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliff (historical fiction, a bit slow at times, but very adventurous)
Blood Feud (same author, also enjoyable, maybe a tad more bloody as a character is a healer and has to deal with stuff)
How They Kept the Faith by Grace Raymond (historical fiction, AMAZING, made me cry, just beautiful)
The Books of Bayern, by Shannon Hale (maybe hints of magic, super unique characters, funny, really nice)
The Great and Terrible Quest, by Margaret Lovett (CUTE and FLUFFY and ADORABLE)
Firethorn Chronicles, by Lea Doue (magic, but still fairly clean, with nice romance and interesting characters)
White Wolf and the Ash Princess, by Tammy Lash (WOW, fun characters, adventure, mystery, new land America, super cool)
Just a few, hopefully ones that haven't already been suggested to you. :)
Totally agree with The Books of Bayern. My favorites were Enna Burning and River Secrets!
DeleteMY WORD JULES WHAT A LIST THANK YOU SO MUCH!! and all your little descriptions make me wanna read them all so bad ahhhh I feel like I should take Blades of Acktar just to make Faith aka Florid Sword happy buuuuutttt I feel like I'll be forever to the series too and meh @ making commitments to read a full series XD Anything by Sutcliff's gotta be good too ;D
Deleteanyway thanks so much for this wonderful list girl <333
@ Emily oohh thanks for seconding that one I'll totally look into them!!
DeleteMoon Over Manifest, by Clare Vanderpool, is really fantastic if you haven't read that. It involves a little girl missing her father during the Great Depression, two boys' friendship during WWI, a small immigrant town, a mysterious gypsy, lots of newspaper clippings, and delicious summery prose.
ReplyDeleteAlso. Anything by G. K. Chesterton cuz the man is the most glorious genius it has ever been my pleasure to read words written by. (He uses a bit of language at times but it's very mild and very Britishy.) One of my favorites is The Ball and the Cross...rollicking philosophical story about a Catholic and an atheist who just want to get away from the police so they can duel each other (their developing relationship is kinda adorable).
I REALLY NEED TO READ MOON OVER MANIFEST especially since Clara mentioned it above! thanks for mentioning it! and G. K. Chesterton yay I've wanted to read him for a while now cos we started watching Father Brown and also bc another Catholic fren recommended him when I said I'd gotten into Catholic nonfic writers!! I also read your post about Chesterton for those who hadn't read him before and this book that you mentioned IT SOUNDS SO GOOD GAH!!
Deletethanks immensely for these MEgan !! I'm sure I'll love them <333
ANYTHING from Lacey Sturm is legit amazing for anyone to read!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAAAHHHHHHHH GOOD TO KNOW THANK YOU KARA <3
DeleteThe Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands is one of my all-time favorite books. It's an MG historical fiction with mystery, murder, hijinks of all kinds, and a little bit of magic. I don't think you've been reading my blog long enough to get tired of me recommending it, so here it is.
ReplyDeleteAlso: if you're looking for a shorter read to help you get through this very big stack of all our recs, The Reluctant Godfather by Allison Tebo is awesome. One of my favorite 2018 reads, the humor + heart are perfectly balanced. Ella, Cynthia, and Burndee are all fantastic characters. I can't recommend it to you enough either!!
Eleanor | On the Other Side of Reality
ooohhh The Blackthorn Key is an all time favorite of one of my best friends so THANKS FOR CONVINCING ME THAT I'D BETTER GET TO IT!! ahhh I really need to pick up one of Allison's books - it's great that you mentioned that one as well. *moves it higher on the tbr* you're the best, thanks for commenting Ellie !! <333
DeleteOh! The Everland Series by Wendy Spinale. Each book is a retelling of a different classic story (book 1 is Peter Pan, book 2 is Alice in Wonderland, and book 3 is The Wizard of Oz.) They're sat in dystopian London and Germany. I listened to them on Hoopla, and I finished the whole trilogy in a week! There's a little language, but overall it's a really great series!
ReplyDeleteMY WORD THAT SOUNDS FANTASTIC! I will certainly look it up on hoopla!! ALSO HI AND WELCOME EMILY IT'S SO GREAT TO SEE YOU HERE <3 thanks for checking out my blog and thanks for the recommendations <333
DeleteYou have to check out the Geek Girl series by Holly Smale.
ReplyDeleteI always recommend that because I don't have many faves. I'm still on the lookout for them so yeah xD
SO MANY.
ReplyDeleteALL the CS Lewis - but especially The Space Trilogy, The Great Divorce, and Till We Have Faces.
Vicious and Vengeful by VE Schwab
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Lilith by George MacDonald
The Girl Who Drank the Moon and The Witch's Boy by Kelly Barnhill (a lot like The Sorceress and the Squid, very similar styles)
The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neverwhere, and the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Brave New World
Fahrenheit 451
The Bell Jar (content advisory)
Winter's Bone (content advisory)
On Chesil Beach (content advisory)
The Refrigerator Monologues (content advisory)
The Book Thief
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
The Girl on the Train (content advisory)
Those are just some of my more recent ones that I really enjoyed! Some of them you've probably read, but all of them were 4 or 5 star reads for me!
Ohh, I second Till We Have Faces! I didn't think of that one. It was a really hard read for me (and I might give a content warning?), but well worth it. After I read it the second time, I realized how good it was. I'm due for a reread again...

A lot of my 5-star this year books were historical fiction (which is weird, considering I'm a die hard fantasy fan?) A few of those that I'd recommend are:
ReplyDeleteThe Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
Rise to Rebellion by Jeff Shaara
The Chestry Oak by Kate Seredy
