The Nameless Book Tag

A funny thing happened to me this week. But to understand it you need the back story:

During the Silmarillion Awards in July, there was this girl I saw in the comments of the various posts.
She always nominate/seconded a Ted Dekker character. Especially Circle/Lost Books characters.

And I, plus the awesome Tracey Dyck, always did the same.

Tracey even said -- "wow you two are like my Ted Dekker buddies. We keep seconding each others nominations." It was so true. And this other girl really really caught my attention because TED DEKKER FANS ARE RARE.

Her name was Kate Marie.

And I tried to find her. I did. But I just could not seem to find her link. Until Jem so VERY NICELY includes it in her post recently. I immediately fly over to Story and Dark Chocolate to exclaim my delight at finally having found Kate after so long.

Kate replies to my comment after a bit and with something like, "LISAAAAA HI!!! How could I forget??? Ted Dekker fans are so rare I SHALL TREASURE YOU FOREVER. Thank you so much for hunting me down and for the follow!!! You are awesome.

By the way ... waaaaaayyy back when we were twinning at the Sil Awards, I tagged you for something but, ahem, forgot to tell you about it. Here it is if you'd like to do it!!!"

And let me just tell you ... I WAS FLOORED.

Like, wait whaaaat??? It took me ages to find you and you like knew of my existence all along and even tagged me and even linked to MY BLOG in that tag??? How did I not know this?

Also I felt pretty stupid for being so late in finding her, when she, all the way back in July, knew all about me.

Okay well it's not my fault she hid all her links so well.

BUT ANYWAY. AHEM. HERE IS THE TAG. These days it's called the Mysteriously Nameless Tag of Doom. Before it was called, the I Dare You Tag. Neither suits it very well, but who even cares???

// What book has been on your shelf the longest? //

Gladys Aylward: No Mountain Too High. I got this book when I was ... eight. I was the first "chapter book" with no pictures inside that I ever read. And I still have it sitting on my shelf to this day, quite intact, and with a place of honor. I was really proud of myself after finishing it -- and it also sparked my love of biographies, missionaries, and dangerously adventurous true life stories.

// What is your current read, your last read, and the book you’ll read next? //

Current: Fangirl and Siren's Song

Fangirl is contemporary and pretty cool -- even though it has a few content issues. Siren's Song is the last of Mary Weber's trilogy and I promised a review of the series once I finished this -- which is why I'm reading it.

Last: Heartless

MARISSA MEYER. It wasn't on par with the Lunar Chronicles books but still. THE ENDING. It felt like Alice in Wonderland smashed with Shakespeare ...

Because TED DEKKER. And I will be studying travel writing once Nano is over. That's the December writing plan haha :)

// What book did everyone like, but you hated? //

I don't hate books. I just don't. But one of my least favorites is the Snow Like Ashes trilogy. Book one was okay, really! But the next two  were just ... so. deathly. boring. And I don't think everyone liked them?? But I read them because others I know did!!

// What book do you keep telling yourself you’ll read, but you probably won’t? //

Let's just be honest. EVERYTHING CURRENTLY ON THE TBR.

To be more exact, probably classics like Jules Verne and Dickens. Also probably the thousand over books of Alexandre Dumas -- who am I kidding here? Who can read that many???

// What book are you saving for retirement? //

All the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books of ever!!! Yes, I'm not joking. I still love both these series and I'll never grow out of them!! I first discovered the Hardy Boys when my dad borrowed the audiobook for us! And Nancy was soon to follow. I mean now that I read them the writing is so super simple and the plots are so predictable, but do I care?? NO!

// Last page: read it first, or wait ’til the end? //

Usually wait till the end. But if ...

a) it gets boring or

b) I don't think I want to read the full thing or
c) I get the awesome idea to be a rebel AND GO SEE THE END or
d) if the end is infamous for a twist or surprise ...

then I'll read the end first!!!

//Acknowledgement: waste of paper and ink, or interesting aside? //

IT'S LIKE THE BEST PART!!! I mean IF THERE'S NO ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I WILL CRY. Enough said.

// Which book character would you switch places with? //

I keep thinking Hadley because I RELATE SO HARD TO HER. See if Death gave me a chance to save someone I know from suicide I would accept without question. But I like would probably die before I'd work up the courage to stalk Archer ... *hides from the thought of it*

// Do you have a book that reminds you of something specific in your life? (Place, time, person?) //

Basically every book I ever read.

// Name a book that you acquired in an interesting way. //

There's quite a few...

The Sorceress and the Squid -- I won this in a giveaway!!! Like the first time of ever, and also ... I'd totally forgotten I was entered lol.

Peter Nimble -- I got to pick this as an "prize" for entering a writing contest. Then I won gift cards in the contest and bought myself The Book Thief.

The Coronation -- this was an ebook -- BUT THE LOVELY AUTHOR JUST GAVE IT TO ME ^-^

Let Me Be a Woman -- my fabulous cousin bought this for me and it's super rare that that actually happens xD

Have you ever given a book away for a special reason to a special person?

I've got birthday/Christmas presents for family. That's basically it. I recall getting Warriors, Dragon Rider, Magic Tree House and The Kestrel ... probably more but shhh Christmas isn't here yet ;)

Which book has been with you most places?

Hmmm .... I'm guessing either Gladys Aylward or my Bible. Pretty self-explanatory.

Any “required reading” you hated in high school that wasn’t so bad later?

I never hate reading required or not. So no. I've always loved all required reading.

Used or brand new?

Usually used, but I do prefer brand new xD

Have you ever read a Dan Brown book?

Forgive me for this ... but who is Dan Brown???

Have you ever seen a movie you liked more than the book?

In short, no. But I have a feeling that I would prefer the How to Train Your Dragon movies if I ever did read the books. Just because I'm used to it.

Have you ever read a book that’s made you hungry, cookbooks included?

I'm not the kind of person who gets hungry while reading. But Heartless had some delicious sounding, well described desserts xD After all Catherine wants to have a bakery and I relate pretty well being a baker's daughter haha xD

Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?

Quite a few people .... especially my Goodreads friends (not all of them of course, but quite a few).

I'd say I whole-heartedly trust Abigayle Claire (cause she's my reading accountability partner lol),and  Savannah. I do take other people's book advice too -- but I really really believe these two.

Is there a book out of your comfort zone (e.g., outside your usual reading genre) that you ended up loving?

Divergent would really be it. My first real secular YA sci-fi and ... I just ... WAS FOREVER HOOKED ON YA AND SCI-FI. No question.

Okay that was that and I'm just going to tag ...

Olivia ... Maddy ... Nicole ... and Ella ...

so. what books are you leaving for retirement? also, which character would you switch places with???

    1. YES. IN FACT I USUALLY READ THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS FIRST! Ikr?? I'd tell you to steal it from me but you went on hiatus *sigh*

  2. HTTYD gets mentioned so here I am! XD Yeah, the movies are better. I haven't read the books, but I've researched them enough to know that Toothless and Hiccup are better in the movie. Astrid isn't even in the book, so there's no Hiccstrid, which is unacceptable.

As for Heartless, I actually like it more than the Lunar Chronicles. But all of those books ...*heart eyes*

Such a fun tag. Book I'm saving for retirement? I didn't think I was. XD

    2. I haven't seen the movies, but book!Toothless is THE BEST THING EVER. (Does movie!Toothless talk? just wondering??) I will fight you if necessary, Ivie. *nods seriously* *falls over my own feet* FEAR ME.

      Delete
    3. @Ivie -- that's what I think about book vs. movie too but of course I can't be sure I won't like the book unless I actually read it. I'll certainly miss Ruff and Astrid too :(

All to their own tastes, huh? BUT MARISSA IS AN AMAZING AUTHOR ANYWAY. I got her latest, Rengades, and can't wait to see what that is like. It's probably like 600 pages tho :P

FEEL FREE TO STEAL THE TAG ...

    4. @Retse -- lol of course you do xD

    5. MOVIE TOOTHLES IS THE BEST THING EVER AND YOU NEED TO WATCH THEM ASAP BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST MOVIES IN THE WORLD!!!! Ahem, no he doesn't talk, but he does make faces and you know pretty much what he would be saying. WATCH THE MOVIES!!!!
I will fight you, too! Its a good thing you chose the world's most deadliest weapon...me. (Quote from the first movie.) XD Jk, I wouldn't fight you. XD I haven't read the books, but my bro started the first book. He said it just wasn't the same.

      Delete
    6. @Retse- I don't ship Hicctooth. I love them as a rider/dragon relationship. I hardcore ship Hiccstrid and I'm not okay with people shipping Hiccup with girls not even in the movie. I've seen him shipped with Elsa, Merida, and other non-female characters. (Don't even get me started on that last part.)

      Delete
    7. @Lisa, I love Astrid. It wouldn't be the same.

      Delete
    8. @Jem -- Toothless is the best thing ever apparently, book or movie xD Movie Toothless doesn't talk ... but he understands puns??? I should read the books... I just fear it will mess with my HTTYD love in some way :P

I'd love to see you to fight it out, tbh xD

      Delete
    9. @Ivie -- she doesn't "ship" Hictooth but she doesn't ship anyone or understand shipping very well anyway lol

THAT ABT OTHER PEOPLE SHIPPING CHARACTERS A WORLD APART IS RIDICULOUS THOUGH JUST SAYING

      Delete
    10. *raises fists* We can do it with street fighting because I've researched that for my book and am like 37% sure I could do it in life. Or, I could get the inferno sword and Astrid's ax and totally fight Viking style. XD

      Delete
    11. She's all for dragon/rider relationships -- not romance. Too bad for Hicstrid lol

      Delete
    12. Sorry Ivie -- same time commenting messes with the sense and order of things lol

      Delete
    13. I KEEP SEEING THEM SHIP HICCUP WITH OTHERS AND ARE LIKE, "You can't judge me I can do what I want." I'm like, "Hello, snowflake, they aren't even in his movie. Why would he like them? Him and Astrid are Canon, so they can't be torn apart." XD

      Delete
    14. That's okay, I'm still seeing your comments. XD. I'm all for dragon/rider relationships, too, I just also am a sucker for some romance...sometimes. It has to be put with other plot-lines. Hiccstrid is adorable.

      Delete
    15. People have the right to have their crazy opinions but personally ... LIKE WHAT?? But they should just go write fanfic abt it xD

      Delete
    16. And you say you don't like romance all that much. Tsk tsk *rolls eyes*

      Delete
    17. The do, trust me. And they brag about their ships while being bent out of shape that someone doesn't agree with them and thinks that Hiccstrid is the only ship possible.

The list of ships they do is ridiculous.

      Hiccup+Elsa
      Hiccup+Merida
Hiccup+Jack Frost (Like, ew. Hiccup is NOT gay. That one is so weird)
They actually pair him with a few males and I get really angry at those. Its all fine and dandy when people want to go around shipping across the fandoms, but don't make a character something they're not.
*shakes head* The fan-girls (and fan-boys) get a little out of hand.

      Delete
    18. Hm. Jumping back to Astrid being canon, are we counting both books and movies as HTTYD canon?? because things could get messy. AND I WILL TOTALLY FIGHT YOU, IVIE. (don't laugh. Don't- IVIE. I AM VERY INTIMIDATING. STOP LAUGHING. *trips over nothing* AND PUT AWAY THAT AXE.)

      Delete
    19. *jumps into this conversation because HTTYD is my life*

HOW ANYONE CAN SHIP HICCUP WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN ASTRID IS JUST BEYOND ME. HE AND ASTRID ARE JUST MEANT TO BE TOGETHER AND I'M SORRY BUT #bitemebro

ALSO HICCSTRID IS IN THE MOVIES AND IT MAKES ME FLAIL AND CRY SO MUCH YOU HAVE NO IDEA. BUT THE HICCUP/MERIDA SHIP DRIVES ME CRAZY BECAUSE YES THEY'RE BOTH VIKINGS BUT LIKE COME ON, THEY'RE FROM TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WORLDS!

      @Lisa
And don't be upset about Toothless not talking, he's just adorable and cute and he even draws at one point. His animators were pure genius'.

      *ends rant*

      Delete
    20. No wait, I meant @Jem. *facepalm*

      Delete
    21. @Ivie -- One has to remember that Hiccstrid began in HTTYD movie #1 in which he was an awkwardly dorky and lovable genius of a 15 year old ... and Astrid was tailor made for him while remaining a great character in her own right. So doing a "mix-and-match" won't work well because well ... these characters are just worlds apart lol (and Jack Frost srsly because that horrible and I am glad I'm not part of the official fandom).

      Delete
    22. @Jem -- I think you should see the movie and Ivie should read the books so we'd get and unbiased debate here *nods*

      Delete
    23. @MUSICGIRL -- WOW HEY WELCOME <33 ANOTHER HTTYD FAN??? *fist bump* We should create a club!! I could never ship anyone but Hiccup and Astrid even though I personally don't flail over them *shrug* It's just how it is and no one can change it so I go with it lol

      Delete
    24. After participating in this discussion yesterday, I kind of watched basically the entire first movie via 5-min YouTube clips??

And - okay. The movie is probably best for emotion and Feels(TM). And Toothless is pretty adorable (okay, super-adorable). And there was some nice emotion between Hiccup and Stoik. But book!Toothless is worthwhile too! He's complaining, sassy, and disobedient, but deep deep down in his cold little dragon heart, he really cares about Hiccup. (That's his character development.)

So. I've (basically) seen the first movie. Now you should give book!Toothless a chance! xD

(wow we're all taking this so seriously xD xD)

      Delete
    25. @Jem -- okay I'll make you a deal. You go watch the FULL movies both 1 and 2 and in January (if not before) I'll go borrow the HTTYD books and read them (depending on how I like it I may read the full series) and do a post comparing them to the movies!!! What do you say?? (And Ivie and Musicgirl feel free to join xD)

      Delete
    26. Okay whoops I didn't see you said "entire movie via ... clips". Go watch the second then. also watch the first one beginning to end in DVD if you get the chance ;) No pressure though lol

      Delete
    27. I've been planning to read the first HTTYD book for awhile and I actually have it in my home library. I just haven't gotten around to reading it yet cause other books keep taking priority. But I could probably find time to read it soon.

@Jem -- WATCH THE SECOND ONE WITH TISSUES BECAUSE IT MADE ME CRY IN THE THEATER.

@Ivie -- Didn't that one scene just rip your heart out? Like, come on, IT WAS SO EMOTIONAL AND JOHN POWELL MADE IT EVEN BETTER WITH THE BEAUTIFUL CLIMAX OF MUSIC AND VOICES. Ugh, come fangirl with me over the music, please?

SOMEONE PLEASE FLAIL WITH ME I NEED A FANGIRL STAT!!

*SPOILER, JEM DON'T READ THIS PART!!*

I can play Stoick's Ship on the piano and it makes me sooooo sad whenever I do! That beautiful climax in the middle of the song just makes me wanna cry!!

*OKAY COME BACK NOW JEM WE LOVE YOU*

@Lisa: I don't know if I'll read the books. I've done A LOT of research on websites that spoil things, so I pretty much know what the books are like, plus input from my brother. He wasn't amused. XD

@Jem: I can have the inferno sword if you prefer that over me having an ax. XD
BUT THE FIRST MOVIE IS SO AMAZING AND THE SECOND... *flails*

YES IT'S REALLY CHILLING SO FAR. I LOVE CREEPY BOOKS (books that are creepy in a good way of course... which is totally Ted Dekker's books ;D).

YES THE SORCERESS AND THE SQUID. It was my first ever ARC too ^.^

ARGH I KNOW, I HAVE NO LOGIC. But like I'd heard of the infamous ending of Heartless so I just went and read the last chapter first so that it wouldn't crush me to badly later *nods* Also the Mockingjay ending didn't hurt me too badly because I'd already read the end. See?? It helps :P

What do you think about Mellissa Meyer's books? I've heard a bunch about them, but still trying to decide if they're worth getting. I'm still very cautious about getting new books, lol. Kinda afraid of what I might find in them. :)

But the Sorceress and the Squid sounds like such a fun, lovely, great book I'm debating if I want to get it even though it has magic (and I'm not a fan of magic). *frantically pounds keyboard in hopes that'll help me make decisions*

    1. Wait whaaat?? THAT IS BEYOND COOL *high five* I should read it for old times sake too lol

Ah, I highly recommend Marissa Meyer's books!! The Lunar Chronicles was totally awesome and five stars and on my top-faves-of-all-time list so YES DO TRY THEM OUT. They are fairy tale retelling set in the future!! Heartless was a retelling of Wonderland and the Queen of Hearts and was really loooong but with a superb ending and apparently Ivie and Lila at least think really highly of it, so that's definitely good to check out too *nodnod* Nothing beyond romance in there xD

The Sorceress and the Squid was really good ^-^ I understand if you don't like magic, but in here it was ... like how things just naturally worked? There's a Creator in there and it's basically how He designed things to work so there's that in your favor ;)

  18. I stumbled upon this book tag, and yeah, I love HTTYD. I was so excited to hear it was based on a book, and I never got the book, because I can tell just from the book bio that the movie was approximately 6.97 times better... and the sequel was about 10.78 times better ;).

    1. Well stumbling upon tags is one of the best things XD Hey Bri!! HTTYD YES ... *nodnod* I saw the movie first too, and upon seeing it was based on the book, I went and flipped through it in the library ... honestly I think the things that put me off were the illustrations (which looked a bit weird) and that the two girls were not in there!!?? But it's like a ten-book series!!? Thanks for the comment, Bri!
